Umno Leaders Buoyed By Recent Polls Victories Wish Delegates Well Ahead Of General Assembly
PETALING JAYA: Umno leaders have wished their delegates all the best for a successful gathering ahead of the party’s general assembly which starts Wednesday (March 16).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also Umno vice president, called on party members to make the conference a platform for the grassroots' voices to be heard.
“(They are) the strength and spirit of the party," he said in a Facebook post Tuesday (March 15).
Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, also known as Tok Mat, took to Facebook to wish the members a good assembly.
“Have a good sitting to all delegates of Umno at the 2021 general assembly from March 16-19,” he said on Wednesday.
He also invited the public to tune in to the inaugural speech for the Women, Youth and Puteri wings at 8pm Wednesday.
Supreme council member Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said he hoped this year's convention would continue to strengthen the party, solidify bonds among the members and build the nation.
“This party has done a great service to the country. It has made a great contribution to us. This party remains steadfast in its struggle for the sake of our religion, nation and homeland,” he said.
Puteri Umno chief Datuk Zahida Zarik Khan said she was grateful that the general assembly that was postponed had finally arrived.
“Praise be to God, the assembly can (go on) starting today. It would definitely be more special with the spirit of victory after Melaka and Johor,” she said, welcoming delegates from different parts of the country to Kuala Lumpur.
In a post on Facebook, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak reminded the members of Umno’s struggles over the years.
He also called on every level of membership, from the grassroots to the top leaders, to always remember the mandate given by the people.
“Remember that what we have from then to today is from the people, the blessings and grace of the people. And we must grasp it tightly, strengthen it and improve,” he said.
The Umno General Assembly 2021 was supposed to be held in January, but was postponed to March 16-19.
The convention will kick off with the Women, Youth and Puteri wing meetings Wednesday night. -Star
