Uitm Sacks Lecturer In Lewd Survey Case

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has terminated the service of a lecturer who was recently implicated in an alleged sexually laced survey against a female student.
In a statement, the university announced that the decision was with immediate effect.
It also stressed that the institution takes any claim of sexual harassment involving its current and former students seriously and thus launched an investigation into the allegation.
This was done according to provisions under the Statutory Bodies (Discipline and Surcharge) Act 2000 (Act 605).
Elaborating further, the university said it conducted a thorough investigation starting last year to collect evidence before it was able to prove the offence and decide on punishment.
“After all questioning procedures and internal investigations were done, the case was taken to the highest level of the disciplinary committee and UiTM hereby decided to terminate the service of the said lecturer with immediate effect,” the statement read.
UiTM vice-chancellor Roziah Mohd Janor was also quoted as saying that the academic community of UiTM was always reminded from time to time about Act 605.
“UiTM will not compromise and will definitely take strong action if anyone is found guilty of violating the law or acting in a manner which can be constituted as disobeying orders.”
Allegations shared online
Previously, a woman believed to be the student involved in the incident tweeted claims that her lecturer started committing lewd actions last year.
She shared images of a police report that she lodged and screenshots of her WhatsApp conversation with the lecturer.
The conversation showed that the lecturer had, among others, asked the student to take part in a 'Survey on Sexual Awareness Among Students of Higher Learning Institutions'.
Among other questions, the survey asked respondents to state if they have used sex toys and whether they were aroused by the survey.
Another survey question asked respondents to arrange the ideal sequence of events during an intimate encounter.
The student later aired her disappointment online after not receiving an update from UiTM and authorities about the case.
An online search also showed that the lecturer was still listed as an academic staff at one of UiTM’s campuses.
On Sept 9, police reportedly said the investigation paper into the case was sent back to the Tangkak police station in Johor for “further investigation”.
It was learned that further investigation had been carried out and the investigation paper was then sent to the Johor police headquarters. - Mkini
