Two Vigil Participants To Be Charged In Court Tomorrow

Two women – Selangor DAP women’s wing secretary Nalina Nair and another participant of the candlelight vigil in Dataran Merdeka last Thursday, Sujatra Jayaraj – will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur High Court tomorrow in relation to their arrest on the night of the vigil.
Nalina said the two of them will be charged under Section 90 of the Police Act 1967, which states that “any person who, in a police station behaves in a riotous, indecent, disorderly or insulting manner shall be guilty of an offence under this Act.”
They face a fine not exceeding RM500 or imprisonment not exceeding six months or both, if convicted.
“Again, I stress, the real criminals are out there. They have allowed 14,818 people to die up to today because they do not care about the people and only care about what political power they can garner.
“Know that I am not intimidated and will not kowtow to such cowardly tactics to instil fear into those of us who demand good governance and better management of this Covid-19 pandemic,” Nalina said in a posting on her Facebook tonight.
Last Thursday, during the candlelight vigil held for Covid-19 victims, 31 of the participants were arrested by the police and slapped with RM2,000 compound each – totalling RM62,000 – for violating regulations preventing demonstrations during the pandemic.
A number of the participants who were detained that night later lodged police reports over the arrests, alleging unprocedural arrest, rights denied and unlawful detention.
One vigil participant also lodged a police report over physical injuries she allegedly sustained at the hands of five police personnel who lifted and dragged her into custody. - Mkini
