Two Term Pm Limit Not Retrospective
KUALA LUMPUR: The Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2019 to limit the tenure of the Prime Minister to two terms will not operate retrospectively, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong (pic)
“This amendment is prospective. It will only come into force on the date that the prime minister is appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong
“It will not affect the previous terms of the current prime minister, ” Liew told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday
He added that the amendments would limit the tenure of the prime minister to two terms
“If I have served for two terms, I will not be eligible for the third or fourth term, ” he said
Asked if the amendments would affect the chances of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak returning to office, Liew said it would not
“If he comes back, he would hold the post for two terms at most, ” he added
He also noted that the amendments would require the agreement of at least a two-thirds majority of the MPs as it involved constitutional amendments
Earlier, Liew tabled the Bill for its first reading in the Dewan Rakyat
He said the Bill would be debated in the following Parliament session, which is expected to begin in March next year
In October, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that the Pakatan Harapan government planned to limit the tenure of the prime minister, mentris besar as well as chief ministers to two terms
