Trump Praised Malaysia S Role In Thai Cambodia Ceasefire Anwar
The United States has acknowledged Malaysia’s success in facilitating the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, describing it as a major achievement that demonstrated the country’s credibility and Asean’s strength, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said the matter was conveyed by US President Donald Trump during a telephone call today.
In the conversation, Anwar also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment as Asean chair to continue playing a proactive role in ensuring regional peace, particularly on the Cambodia-Thailand issue.
“I also conveyed my appreciation to him for the role played by the US in ensuring that the ceasefire was achieved,” he said in a Facebook post.
Malaysia, with the support of the US and China, acted as mediator in brokering the peace agreement to end military conflict between Cambodia and Thailand on July 28 and at the extraordinary meeting of the General Border Committee in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 7 to strengthen the peace deal.
On July 28, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following heightened tensions along their disputed border.
The ceasefire agreement was reached in a special meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and then acting Thai prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai in Putrajaya, chaired by Anwar.
In his Facebook post, Anwar said Malaysia looks forward to Trump’s attendance at the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur next month, which will serve as an important platform to strengthen cooperation for regional peace, stability and prosperity.
The telephone conversation between the two leaders took place while Anwar was receiving a courtesy call from US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who was in Malaysia to attend the 57th Asean Economic Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings.
