Thor Love And Thunder Postponed Indefinitely In Malaysian Cinemas
The Malaysian release of Walt Disney’s latest blockbuster ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ has been postponed again, this time indefinitely.
Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and TGV Cinemas both released statements on social media today announcing the news.
Prior to the announcement, the movie was meant to be screened here on July 7, but this was later postponed until July 21, before being ultimately deferred indefinitely.
The reason for the postponement was not given. It is unclear whether the delay was due to commercial reasons or pressure from censors.
The movie contains a scene where, Chris Hemsworth, who plays the titular character of Thor, is shown naked from behind with his posterior clearly visible.
Malaysia is not the only country that has an issue with the film, as according to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie appears to be languishing in China’s censorship process.
This is reportedly due to brief LGBTQ moments shown in the film, which alludes that the character Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson, is bisexual and that another character, Korg, is gay.
Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie in a scene from the movieThis controversy came just a month after another Disney movie ‘Lightyear’ ran afoul with the Malaysian Censorship Board.
The board had approved the movie, which contained scenes it said promoted the “LGBT lifestyle”, with some changes and gave it a PG13 rating. However, Disney refused to screen a censored version of the movie.
The response to the indefinite postponement of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ has been a general chorus of dissent as people who have pre-ordered tickets pestered GSC and TGV for refunds.
“It has been 17 days since (I bought my ticket), but I still haven’t received my refund yet,” said Twitter user F Aidil in a reply to GSC’s announcement. - Mkini
