Teresa Kok says Perikatan Nasional leaders’ failure to criticise the Kedah menteri besar’s actions is tantamount to supporting the menteri besar.PETALING JAYA: MIC and MCA should demand that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) presidential council censure Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor over his controversial decision to cancel the public holiday for Thaipusam, Teresa Kok said today.
The Seputeh MP added that the two Barisan Nasional (BN) components should also demand that the decision be overturned.
She suggested that the MIC, which has threatened to withdraw support for Sanusi, launch a nationwide “Boycott PAS Campaign” for religious insensitivity and intolerance of other faiths, if these demands are not met.
“Since this PAS MB has shown utter contempt for the festivals of non-Muslims and openly claimed that his party doesn’t need Indian votes, it is high time for MIC leaders to teach PAS a lesson,” she said in a statement.
Sanusi sparked controversy when he declared that there would be no public holiday for Thaipusam in Kedah this year as all activities for the annual festival had been cancelled due to the restrictions and SOPs under the movement control order.
The directive triggered brickbats, including from former prime minister Najib Razak, DAP as well as MCA and MIC, with the Indian-based party saying it would not arbitrarily support Sanusi in the 15th general election.
Kok, who is DAP deputy secretary-general, went on to say that apart from MIC and MCA, other PN leaders have kept mum over Sanusi’s “racist” statement, adding that refraining from criticising was tantamount to supporting the menteri besar.
She said it was also time for all parties backing the PN-led government, particularly those from Sabah and Sarawak, to protest against the divisive and discriminatory pronouncement by the PAS-led Kedah government.
“If the PAS-led government can implement such a discriminatory policy in Kedah, it will surely push for discriminatory policies in other states too,” she said. - FMT
