Teacher Alleges Death Threat By Tour Guides In Police Report
A teacher from Iskul Sama Di Laut Omadal, a community-run school on Omadal island, Semporna, has lodged a police report against death threats allegedly made by several local tour guides.
Semporna police chief Mohd Farhan Lee in a statement said a 29-year-old man was arrested earlier today in connection with the report and that a remand application will be made for further investigations.
Teacher Jefry Musa in an Instagram post said he lodged a report against guides from two travel agencies who had allegedly ignored his requests for them to stop their guests from taking unconsented nude pictures of Bajau Laut children in Omadal.
According to the police report, Jefry said an argument had yesterday broken out between him and the guides who were unhappy with him recording tourists who were taking photos of nude children.
“During the altercation, I was warned that I would be harmed if I show up in Pekan Semporna.
“After the village chief and Civil Defence Force personnel had broken up our argument, I was informed by villagers that there were death threats made against me by the tour guides,” said Jefry in his report lodged at the Semporna district police station.
“This report is lodged because I worry about my safety as well as other teachers (who will be at the school) in the following days,” read the report posted to Jefry's Instagram.
In a second Instagram post, Jefry indicated that he had previously discussed with the agencies to stop allowing tourists to take pictures of the children.
He claimed, however, they had failed to do so and placed the safety of the children at risk.
