Taib S Son Takes Leave From Cms Group Amid Conflict Of Interest Allegations

Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib - son of Sarawak’s governor and former chief minister Abdul Taib Mahmud - is taking leave from his posts at Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS) and its subsidiaries amid conflict of interest allegations against him.

In a statement today, the company’s board of directors said this followed information received through the group’s whistleblower channels involving Taib and the group’s chief information officer Karl Vink @ Khalid Abdullah.
“Upon receipt of the whistleblower complaints, before reporting to the authorities, the board acted immediately to carry out a full investigation to discharge its fiduciary duties to protect the best interest of the Company and all stakeholders.

“In order to facilitate a full and transparent investigation by the authorities, Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib has voluntarily taken leave of absence from all his positions in the group,” it said in a statement today.

The company did not explain the nature of the conflict of interest involving Bekir and Karl Vink.

Bekir holds directorships at CMS, CMS I-Systems Sdn Bhd, and CMS Capital Sdn Bhd.

He is also CMS’ deputy group chairperson, digital transformation committee chairperson, and member of the group’s nomination and remuneration committee.

In a separate statement, Bekir said the decision to take leave was in the best interest of CMS and all stakeholders.

“I fervently believe this is the right thing to do as stepping aside would enable the authorities to conduct a full and transparent investigation into the allegations.

“On my part, I pledge my utmost cooperation to the authorities so that the investigations can come to a speedy conclusion and for CMS to move forward on our growth path. I look forward to returning from my leave of absence,” he said. - Mkini
