(From left) PKR’s S Kesavan says he will defend the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat if his party asks him to. MIC’s SA Vigneswaran and PSM’s Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj are also keen on the seat.PETALING JAYA: Sungai Siput MP S Kesavan is tight-lipped about whether he plans to defend the seat in the 15th general election (GE15).
The Sungai Siput seat is gearing up to be a hotly contested affair, with both MIC president SA Vigneswaran and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj looking set to throw their hats into the ring.
Asked to comment on the stiff competition and whether he would be joining the fray, PKR’s Kesavan kept his cards close to his chest.
“I think the party leader (Anwar Ibrahim) will finalise the names of the candidates. I cannot overrule the party leader,” Kesavan told FMT.

“As the incumbent, the constituents are happy with my services. And I hope the party will consider this. I will surely contest if the party asks me to.”
He was also effusive when asked if he wanted to contest the seat, stating that he would leave it to the party’s leadership.
“At the end of the day, the party president will finalise the decision, and we must respect that. If he wants me to contest, I will be ready,” he said.
Jeyakumar was the Sungai Siput MP for two terms from 2008 to 2018. He lost his seat to Kesavan in GE14.
Jeyakumar won the seat in 2008 after beating the late S Samy Vellu, the longest-serving MIC president and former works minister who was the Sungai Siput MP for eight terms from 1974.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the dissolution of Parliament yesterday, with GE15 to be held within 60 days. - FMT
