“I will always return to Johor, because this is my hometown. I hope Johoreans will not forget me, and still recognise me. BERNAMA PICKUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia has given his assurance that he continues to keep Johoreans' best interest at heart and will continue to monitor the developments in the state.
"I will always return to Johor, because this is my hometown. I hope Johoreans will not forget me, and still recognise me.
"I leave behind an eye and an ear in Johor to keep tabs on the development here.
"Don't be surprised, if I suddenly turn up in any of the districts," His Majesty said in a video on his official Facebook page.
His Majesty, who was appointed as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong with effect yesterday said the position is not a promotion, but an additional responsibility as head of state to 33 million Malaysians.
"Becoming the King is not a promotion. It's an added responsibility. I will represent the other Rulers.
"The task becomes heavier. But it's a duty call, my right to serve," he said.
His Majesty said he was indeed worried to assume the position.
"Yes, I do have some fear that I cannot carry the job. But, I will try my best. The first thing, the rakyat must be protected.
"A thin stick, can easily be broken. When you have a handful, it is stronger," he said.
Sultan Ibrahim is known for his people-centric approach, inspiring the royal tour Kembara Mahkota Johor, with the first programme took place in 2001 when he was the Tunku Mahkota Johor.
He was elected as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the 263rd (Special) Meeting of the Conference of Rulers in October last year, which also saw Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah elected as Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
His Majesty replaces Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who completed his five-year reign as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 30. - NST
