Suke Bridge Collapse Trailer Driver Tests Positive For Drugs

The driver who crashed his trailer into the Suke highway construction site last night resulting in two deaths has tested positive for drugs.
In a statement today, Kuala Lumpur police traffic enforcement and investigation chief Zulkefly Yahya said the driver was a 40-year-old Malaysian man.
“Preliminary urine test results at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters found him positive for methamphetamines,” he said.
The man, who did not suffer any injuries, is now in police custody.
Zulkefly also provided more details on yesterday’s incident.
“Preliminary investigations have found that the accident happened when the first vehicle (trailer) travelled along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) and when it arrived at the scene, the top part of the trailer crashed into the metal scaffolding at the site where a pedestrian bridge was being constructed.
“This caused a steel beam and the metal scaffolding to fall on both lanes of the MRR2 highway, crashing into the second vehicle (van) that was travelling from Ampang heading towards Bandar Tasik Selatan bus terminal (TBS),” he said.
The accident happened at about 6.15pm yesterday amidst rain and traffic.
The scene was located in front of the Desa Tasik apartment building in Kuala Lumpur, near the TBS.

Five people were inside the van travelling to their workplace at a technology factory in Subang Jaya when the incident happened.

Two female passengers - one aged 47 and the other aged 42 - died at the scene.
Zulkelfy said the van driver - a 47-year-old-man - suffered a broken left collar bone, swollen lungs and internal bleeding.
Two other female passengers also survived with injuries. A 54-year-old woman suffered an injury on her left leg while a 51-year-old woman has an injured left calf.
All three are being treated at the UKM Medical Centre.
Yesterday, Zulkefly refuted a claim by Prolintas Sdn Bhd, the company behind the Suke Expressway project, that the trailer had been overloaded at the time of the incident.

The police officer also confirmed that the case has been reclassified under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs).

This is instead of Section 41(1) of the same act (causing death by reckless or dangerous driving).
This is the second accident involving the Suke construction site in recent months.
In September last year, a concrete slab measuring one-metre square fell and hit a car beneath it. The driver’s hand was injured as a result of the accident.
Main contractor MRCB Builders Sdn Bhd and subcontractor Makna Setia Sdn Bhd were later fined a total of RM180,000 for failing to ensure safety at the construction site. -Mkini
