Five Trapped After Suke Bridge Collapses On Van
A portion of the unfinished Suke highway in Kuala Lumpur has collapsed and five people are believed to be trapped in the rubble.
The collapse occurred after a trailer crashed into the construction site by accident at about 6:15pm today.
The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department confirmed the incident this evening.
“According to the operation commander, when the department arrived at the scene, a bridge from the construction site had collapsed and crushed a factory van.
“The preliminary information that we received is that five victims are trapped in the van,” it said in a statement.
It added that 23 fire and rescue personnel were at the scene.
It did not state the condition of the five people.
The scene is located along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) in the direction of Pandan Indah heading towards Ampang.
It is in front of the Desa Tasik apartment and near the Bandar Tasik Selatan bus terminal.
Videos from eyewitnesses show that the collapsed bridge is in front of an existing overhead pedestrian bridge. The clips also show rain and traffic.
Prolintas Sdn Bhd, the company behind the Suke Expressway project, confirmed in a statement that the collapse happened after an “overloaded” trailer collided into steel building frames at the site.
Kuala Lumpur police traffic investigation and enforcement chief Zulkefly Yahya also confirmed the accident.
This is the second accident involving the Suke construction site in recent months.
In September last year, a square concrete slab measuring one-metre square fell and hit a car beneath it.
The driver’s hand was injured as a result of the accident.
