Students Boo As Uitm Halts Fahmi Reza S Kelas Demokrasi Midway
Artist and activist Fahmi Reza's Kelas Demokrasi session at UiTM Shah Alam today was halted amid chants of protest from students.
Fahmi said he was told he could not continue with the class by the auxiliary police, tasked by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) officials.
"They told students to disperse," Fahmi said on Twitter.
Kelas Demokrasi refers to classes on electoral politics primarily conducted by Fahmi on TikTok live streams since Parliament was dissolved on Oct 10.
In the past week, he held a physical class at the invitation of students at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
The class at UKM was also halted midway yesterday and Fahmi resumed the class at a cafe nearby with several dozen students in tow.
In UiTM today, about 100 students who attended the session started jeering and chanting “Hidup Mahasiswa” and “Hidup Rakyat”, the video Fahmi uploaded on Twitter showed.
The class resumed at a nearby restaurant.
Malaysiakini has contacted UKM and UiTM for a response.
Youth voters are of particular interest in the 15 general election (GE15), which is the first general election after the minimum age of voting was lowered to 18.
It is also the general election after automatic voter registration was implemented.
In a poll by Malaysiakini and Vase.ai, 93 percent of first-time voters aged 18 to 30 said they intend to vote, although more than half struggled with basic knowledge of electoral politics and the Malaysian political landscape.
Analysts say Fahmi's Kelas Demokrasi appeals to young voters, who watch the live streams by the thousands - because he is able to unpack the complexities of local electoral politics in a simple and non-partisan language.- Mkini
