State Polls Claims Of Rocky Umno Mic Relations Show Rivals Desperation Says Zahid
PETALING JAYA: Rivals are painting an image of disharmony between Umno and MIC because they are desperate to gain political mileage, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Barisan Nasional chairman said after a special meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday (Aug 2), it is clear that MIC and Umno have enjoyed strong relations since Barisan was formed in 1973.
"I believe that the meeting showed the togetherness and solidarity between unity government parties and also Barisan.
"It is a desperate move by certain parties, not to mention the ongoing state polls," said Ahmad Zahid in a statement on Aug 2.
He said that during the meeting with Anwar, MIC's top leadership gave various views and aspirations on carrying out the agenda of the unity government.
"They (MIC) also showed commitment to win candidates from Barisan and Pakatan Harapan in the state polls.
Ahmad Zahid said Barisan component parties' loyalty is the bedrock of success enjoyed by the nation.
"I always hope for the continuation of friendship from the top leadership to the grassroots to be defended forever," he added.
Among those present during the meeting with Anwar and Ahmad Zahid were MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran and MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.
Speaking after a meeting with MIC leaders on Wednesday (Aug 2), Anwar said the unity government will continue to develop policies that will help address issues not just of the Indian community, but of all Malaysians.
Vigneswaran also said that himself and other MIC leaders have pledged support towards Anwar's leadership as prime minister. - Star
