Sop Breach Police To Call Up Five More Candidates From Harapan Bn
MALACCA POLLS | After questioning Pakatan Harapan's Kota Laksamana candidate yesterday, police are expected to call up three more candidates from the party and two from BN over alleged standard operating procedure (SOP) violations during nomination day on Monday.
They include Malacca Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh and PKR's Idris Haron.
Malacca deputy police chief Razali Abu Samah said they have opened a total of five investigation papers so far after supporters of the candidates had allegedly gathered to show their support near nomination centres.
Authorities had banned gatherings during the nomination day as a precaution to lower the risk of virus transmission during the Covid-19 pandemic, and candidates were only allowed to come with a proposer and seconder for nomination.
"The investigations were opened under Section 269 of the Penal Code and the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations.
"All the candidates will be called in to have their statement recorded to facilitate our investigation," he told Malaysiakini.
Section 269 of the Penal Code stipulates offences regarding reckless actions that may cause the spread of dangerous diseases, which is punishable with six month jail, or fine, or both.
The prevention of infectious diseases regulation, meanwhile, provides punishment of RM1,000 maximum fine, or maximum of six months jail, or both.
According to Razali, information showed that the violations had allegedly occurred at the nomination centres in Tanjung Bidara (BN), Kuala Linggi (Harapan and BN), Kota Laksamana (Harapan), Telok Mas (Harapan) and Asahan (Harapan).
Rauf and Idris are contesting the Tanjung Bidara and Asahan seats respectively, while the other candidates under scrutiny are Harapan's Julasapiyah Kassim and BN's Rosli Abdullah who are contesting Kuala Linggi, and Ashraf Minghat (Telok Mas).
DAP's Low Chee Leong (centre)
Yesterday, Harapan's Kota Laksamana candidate Low Chee Leong, who is from DAP, was summoned to the Melaka Tengah district police headquarters to give his statement over an alleged SOP violation.
Low however denied that he had committed any wrongdoing, and instead pointed to the BN entourage that accompanied Ab Rauf to the nomination centre. - Mkini
