Snap Polls I Don T Know I M Just A Normal Minister Hamzah
Home Affairs Minister Hamzah Zainuddin said he does not know anything about a snap poll which International Trade and Industries Minister (Miti) Azmin Ali had previously said could happen at any moment
“I don’t know (about any snap polls). I am just a normal minister who takes care of the rakyat and the security and safety of the country,” he told reporters after officiating the handing over of a patrol ship to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) in Port Klang today
Hamzah (photo, above) was asked to respond to Azmin’s statement yesterday, where the latter had said the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had fulfilled the criteria needed to hold snap polls
Azmin said this was due to the PN government successfully handling crises in public health, politics and the economy
A general election can be held this year or next year, the Miti minister added, during a dinner event in Johor Bahru yesterday
However, Hamzah, who is also the Bersatu secretary-general, stressed that he does not have any knowledge about this snap poll
He also asked reporters why they did not direct this question about snap polls to the minister who raised this issue
“Why don’t you ask this question to the minister who brought up this issue? What did he say?” Hamzah asked
When reporters told him that Azmin had said the snap polls would be held as soon as possible, Hamzah said: “Wow, I don’t know because I am not a senior minister
“Maybe this (when the snap polls will be held) is only between the senior ministers and the prime minister,” he said
Hamzah added that a snap poll is not on the main agenda for him
“Whether elections will be held soon or further in the future is not my main agenda
“My main agenda is for the rakyat to be confident in the leadership of Muhyiddin as a prime minister and for the PN government to have cooperation that is stronger than the previous government,” he said
On a separate matter, Hamzah said PN component parties are still discussing on registering the coalition as an official political entity leading up to GE15
He said the registration of PN would take time due to the procedures and constitutions of each of the component parties
“We are asking for each party to resolve that as soon as possible,” he said
However, he did not say whether there was a timeframe for the registration of the PN coalition
PN is an unofficial coalition of Bersatu, BN, PAS and several former PKR leaders, with the support of GPS. - Mkini
