Skudai state assemblyman Marina Ibrahim who is leading these calls is urging the Johor government to prioritise upgrading the ageing infrastructure, warning that it poses serious safety risks and could cause further damage to homes and belongings.
Despite site visits by various agencies, residents remain frustrated by the lack of effective solutions.
Marina pointed out that certain areas, such as Jalan Jelawat, are affected by large pipes obstructing water flow, exacerbating the problem.
"This isn't just about heavy rainfall; the drainage system is simply not capable of handling increasing water flow," she said.
On Feb 4, flash floods affected multiple areas in Skudai, including Jalan Zapin 3, Jalan Ronggeng 4, Jalan Jelawat, Jalan Baung, Jalan Kilang Nanas, Kampung Poh Chee Leng, Syahbandar, and Jalan Laksamana.
Marina has repeatedly raised the issue at district development meetings and the Johor state assembly.
While site visits have been conducted, residents are still waiting for concrete solutions.
She added that many homes have been flooded multiple times over the years, with damage to homes and electrical appliances posing not only financial losses but also safety risks.
"We need urgent intervention before lives are lost," she stressed.
Marina also highlighted that if Johor is serious about achieving developed state status by 2030, the ageing urban drainage system must be immediately upgraded.
