PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian man with Singaporean permanent resident status and his Iranian wife are facing deportation after they were found to be engaging in activities that posed a threat to the country’s security.
Singapore’s home affairs ministry said today that Soo Thean Ling, 65, had his permanent resident status revoked while his wife, Parvane Heidaridehkordi, 38, had her long visit pass cancelled, The Straits Times reported.
The ministry said in a statement the couple will also be banned from re-entering the country.
It said Parvane was involved with a Singapore-registered travel agency that had sponsored visa applications by terrorism-linked foreigners looking to enter the republic. The travel agency has been deregistered.
Investigations found that the travel firm was a front for a syndicate managed by a foreigner based abroad, The Straits Times quoted the ministry as saying.
The ministry said Soo had tried to register a company to undertake travel agency business twice after the authorities launched their probe into the travel agency.
The two applications were rejected on grounds of national security.
He had intended for Parvane to operate the firm’s business, which would have “likely facilitated the woman’s continued involvement in supporting the entry of terrorism-linked individuals into the country”, the ministry was quoted as saying.
“Foreigners in Singapore found to be engaging in activities which pose security risks are liable to have their immigration facilities revoked, and be deported,” it said. - FMT
