Sin Chew S Top Editors Detained Over Jalur Gemilang Gaffe

PETALING JAYA: Sin Chew Daily’s chief editor and deputy chief sub-editor were detained today as part of the investigation into an illustration on the front page of the newspaper which depicted the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon.
Earlier today, Sin Chew said it suspended its chief editor Chan Aun Kuang and deputy chief sub-editor Tsai Shwu San after the gaffe. The duo spent nearly three hours giving their statements to the police.
“We detained them for questioning and brought them to their office to retrieve computers and other items related to the case for further investigation,” said Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain in a Bernama report.
“Both individuals will be released on police bail tonight.”
Razarudin said 40 reports had been lodged nationwide regarding the incident. Police are probing the matter under Section 3(1)(c) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 and Section 4(1)(b) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.
Bernama reported that Chan was reportedly responsible for approving the publication of the illustration on Tuesday while Tsai was the graphic designer behind the image.
Sin Chew has apologised for the mistake and said it would take disciplinary action against the staff members responsible for the gaffe.
It said it would enhance the review procedures for its publications, particularly regarding the use of artificial intelligence.
The Chinese daily also said Chan and Tsai’s suspension is effective immediately and will remain in place until the police investigation into the matter concludes.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim was among those who have criticised Sin Chew for the mistake, which the king said was unacceptable. He also said the news outlet should have been more careful. - FMT
