Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has added to the chorus of criticism aimed at government leaders seen flouting movement control order (MCO) rules
“The government ought to set a good example
“They ought to follow the rules that they set themselves
“However, it seems that they think they are special and don’t have to adhere to the government’s rules,” he said in a video dated today
Deputy health minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali  has faced an intense backlash ever since images showing him and his entourage visiting a tahfiz in Lenggong, Perak during the MCO made it online
The pictures (below) also depicted the group of 20 having a meal while seated next to each other
Perak police now want to question Noor Azmi
 Elaborating, Mahathir said that no one was above the law
“In Malaysia we follow the rule of law. And the law does not discriminate, everyone must follow it [...] so let no one think they are special and that they can set aside the law. This is a bad example,” he said
Under the MCO, people must stay at home and refrain from mass gatherings
Trips outside are limited to one person per household, and can only be for necessary matters
While outside, social distancing needs to be observed by keeping a one-metre distance from others
Those caught violating the MCO can be fined RM1,000 on the spot or be arrested and charged under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988
Under the act, first-time violators can be jailed up to two years or fined, or both. Second-time violators can be jailed up to five years or fined, or both. The fine quantum is not stipulated. - Mkini
