Selangor Will Not Recognise Pekt Members Exco

The Selangor government will not recognise any representatives from the Housing and Local Government Ministry's Penggerak Komuniti Tempatan (PeKT) initiative to serve in the state.
State exco in charge of local governments, Ng Sze Han, said the intended role of PeKT members is seen to be "nearly similar" to the function of existing local councillors.
"The Selangor government is of the view that there is no need to appoint PeKT members to act as liaisons between the community and government as this duty has been entrusted to each local councillor.
"Aside from that, the Selangor government was made to understand there has been the use of local councils' names on the letterhead for PeKT letters," said the Kinrara assemblyperson in a statement," he said.
"Therefore, we wish to clarify that any PeKT appointments in Selangor will not be recognised to avoid contradiction with the role of Selangor councillors provided for under Act 171.
"Any use of a Selangor council's name by PeKT in any form is not allowed and invalid," Ng said.
Last month, Selangor Bersatu chief Abdul Rashid Asari said PeKT would represent the Perikatan Nasional government in opposition-ruled states, and its members will be paid an allowance of RM2,000 a month for their services.
The Selat Kelang assemblyperson also reportedly said Selangor PeKT would appoint 288 members to be drawn from PN parties.
In Parliament, opposition MPs argued that PeKT was unnecessary and set-up to further PN's agenda in Opposition-led states.
They, however, failed to pass four motions to slash PeKT's RM8.62mil allocation from the Housing and Local Government Ministry's budget next year. - Mkini
