Selangor Bersatu Says Can Work With Just Pas If Umno Severs Ties
If Umno persists with its proposal to cut ties with Bersatu, the party will just collaborate with PAS under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) framework, said Selangor Bersatu chief Abdul Rashid Asari.
He said that the party is ready to face the possibility of no longer being in partnership with Umno.
"We are prepared for it. I had a meeting over the matter with Selangor PAS commissioner Ahmad Yunus Hairi and state PN chairperson Azmin Ali on Thursday," Rashid told The Star.
He said that the door was still open to working with Umno, but Bersatu had to make contingency plans if changes were to occur.
"If Umno decides to stay with us, we will have to draft out new terms with them," he added.
A majority of Umno divisions had called for an end to the Umno-Bersatu relationship.
Last night, Umno's Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub announced his decision to withdraw support for the PN government, leaving Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin with just 110 MPs backing him.
Umno's annual general meeting is expected to reach a decision on the matter on Jan 31.
Yesterday, the PAS leadership held an anti-climactic meeting as it had been expected to decide which of the bickering parties it would support, but ultimately it avoided the issue.
Central committee member Khairuddin Aman Razali said the meeting was just a regular monthly one and the Islamist party still adhered to the principle of empowering Muafakat Nasional with Umno and defending the PN coalition led by Bersatu.
Umno divisions also favour working with PAS under the Muafakat banner. - Mkini
