Seafield Riots Up To Cops To Use Sedition Act Anwar Says
It is the prerogative of the police to use the Sedition Act 1948 on the instigators of the Seafield temple riots, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said today. “We leave it up to the wisdom of the police because the law is still existing now, and also up to the wisdom of the home minister
“What is important is to charge the instigators, we must take action (against them) according to existing laws,” he stressed
Anwar was speaking at a press conference in Damansara after the launch of Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad's book, 9 May 2018: Notes from the Frontline
It was reported earlier today that police opened four investigation papers under the Sedition Act in connection with the riots that occurred outside the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya last week. The abolishment of the act and several other contentious security laws is among the items on Harapan's election manifesto
In October, the cabinet said it would suspend enforcement of the Sedition Act until its repeal. 'Unreasonable' gatheringAnwar was also asked to comment on next weekend's planned rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd), jointly organised by Umno and PAS
The PKR president stressed that there was no reason for the rally to continue, as Putrajaya had already announced that the United Nations instrument would not be ratified. “I think there is no reason for them to continue with this rally
“If we said we would (continue to) study (the treaty), then it is the people’s right to hold a rally
“But to gather in protest of Icerd is unreasonable, because we have already rejected it,” he said.Anwar urged Umno and PAS leaders to reconsider holding the gathering given the current environment of racial anxiety
“I hope they will not continue with the rally,” he said. - Mkini
