Save Your Excuses While Doctors Save Lives Akmal Chides Johari
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has torn into Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul, accusing the latter of snoozing in luxury and spouting “stupid statements” on a fat salary while doctors lose sleep to save lives.
The Merlimau assemblyperson said this in a scathing condemnation of Johari’s reasoning behind his dismissal of a suggestion for a 50 percent cut to lawmakers’ allowances to fund an increase in doctors’ on-call allowances.
Johari reportedly claimed that while doctors can keep their entire wages for themselves, an MP is expected to fork out funds from their RM25,000 monthly allowance to run their office, donate to constituents for various occasions, and contribute during emergencies.
Quoting remarks Johari made during an interview with BFM, health portal CodeBlue detailed in a report yesterday that the former PKR MP also said: “If you start talking about giving allowances to doctors, how about the police? How about the fire and rescue personnel? How about everybody?”
ADSIn a stinging rebuke of Johari’s comments, Akmal reiterated his challenge for lawmakers to work on-call at hospitals in order to experience the actual situation faced by medical personnel.

Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul“(You) sleep soundlessly in a big house on a comfortable bed with air conditioning, but they (doctors) stay up all night, working to save lives!
“Yes, saving lives, not just making stupid statements and taking stupid actions, then getting tens of thousands in salary!” Akmal chided in a Facebook post today, attaching a screenshot of the CodeBlue article on Johari’s statement.
Just keep quiet if you have nothing nice to say
He stressed that even if there is no intention to assist the nation’s struggling healthcare workers, it would be wise to refrain from making remarks like Johari’s, as they only serve to feed the public’s anger towards politicians.
“If you don’t want to give (help), then there’s no need for statements like this (that will) make the people upset with politicians,” he said.
Previously, Akmal took the Health Ministry to task over Putrajaya’s reversal on raising doctors’ on-call allowances, with the Umno figure arguing it is unacceptable that ministers receive hefty financial perks while healthcare workers remain undervalued.
Akmal had also cautioned then that the nation’s healthcare system could be at risk as more doctors and healthcare workers might migrate overseas in light of the “treatment” accorded to them here.
Suggesting that Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad and other ministers “work together” with healthcare workers in hospitals for a week in order to better understand the situation, Akmal urged the government not to dole out “empty promises”. - Mkini
