Sarawak Polls On Dec 18 Nomination On Dec 6

The Sarawak state election will take place on Dec 18, with early voting set for Dec 14, announced the Election Commission (EC) chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh (above).
"There will be a 12 day campaign period after the declaration of candidates who will be contesting in the state election on Dec 6," he said in a statement today.
A total of 1.25 million voters - including 1.23 million ordinary voters, 12,585 military personnel and spouses, 10,458 police personnel and spouses and 113 absent overseas voters - are eligible to vote in the Dec 18 state polls.
Abdul Ghani said the EC has targeted a 70 percent voter turnout rate.
The EC has also extended the polling time by 30 minutes in 346 polling centres, which will be opened for voters from 7.30am to 5pm on Dec 18, while the balance of 1,520 polling centres will operate according to set hours.
He said that a total of 1,866 voting centres with 3,555 voting streams and 85 early voting centres with 111 voting streams would be prepared for the state poll.

The Sarawak poll is expected to cost about RM150 million.
A guideline on Covid-19 prevention measures was being updated by the health ministry, National Security Council (NSC), the police and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee.
"The guidelines will be announced after being finalised," said Abdul Ghani.
Sarawak BN, led by the late Adenan Satem, won 72 out of the 82 seats up for grabs in the May 7, 2016 state election, while Pakatan Harapan won the remaining 10 seats.
After the 2018 general election, BN's Sarawak-based parties quit the coalition and formed Gabungan Parti Sarawak.
The nomination is set for Dec 6, he told a press conference in Kuching today.
The state legislative assembly was due to dissolve automatically on June 7 following the expiry of its term, but the state poll was suspended due to the nationwide emergency to combat Covid-19, which ended on Aug 1.
A localised emergency was declared for Sarawak from Aug 2 to Feb 2, 2022, but this was lifted with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s approval on Nov 3.
That paved way for the long-delayed Sarawak elections, which must now be held within 60 days from Nov 3. - Mkini
