Sabah To Build Rm3bil Run Of River Power Plant This Year

Sabah is expected to commence construction of a 162-megawatt run-of-river project in Sipitang this year, known as Project Oriole. KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is expected to commence construction of a 162-megawatt run-of-river project in Sipitang this year, known as Project Oriole.
Jentayu Sustainable Bhd executive chairman Datuk Beroz Nikmal Mirdin said the project, costing nearly RM3 billion, will be undertaken by its subsidiary Oriole Power Sdn Bhd through a joint partnership with Yayasan Sabah and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd.
"We are asking for 31.5 sen per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
"We are currently in the midst of finalising the agreements, including the power purchase agreement and the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contract to build the plant," he said when met at Jentayu's Hari Raya open house at a hotel here.
The event was attended by Sabah governor Tun Musa Aman and his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin.
Beroz said commissioning is targeted by mid-2029 at the latest.
"This is green power – and over time will prove to be highly cost-effective for Sabah," he said.
He added that since Jentayu is a Sabahan-owned company, it feels it is their responsibility to supply reliable and affordable electricity for the benefit of the people.
Beroz also highlighted the success of its flagship hydro projects – Telekosang 1 and 2 in Tenom– which have been operating for nearly two years.
"We are supplying one of the most affordable generation rates in Sabah – 24 sen per kilowatt-hour – to the power grid," he said.
The Telekosang plants have a combined capacity of 40 megawatts – 24 megawatts from Telekosang 1 and 16 from Telekosang 2, he added.
"During the rainy season, output can reach up to 44 megawatts," said Beroz, who personally managed both plants.
"This is domestic direct investment by Sabahans, for Sabah," he emphasised. - NST
