Sabah Ph Welcomes New Coalition Member Upko
Sabah PKR chief Christina Liew said she would be inviting Upko to the next Sabah PH meeting as an official member soon.KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders have welcomed news of Upko joining their ranks, with its chairman Christina Liew leading the congratulatory wishes.
Liew, who is also state PKR chief, said it was good to have another component party in the coalition, especially from Sabah.
“Working together is always a good thing,” she told FMT. “I’m glad they are with us. I believe we will be able to join hands and discuss seat allocations (for the next general election) better.”
The Tawau MP said she would be inviting Upko to the next Sabah PH meeting as an official member soon.
Upko became the opposition coalition’s fourth component party today, joining PKR, DAP and Amanah.
In a statement earlier today, PH secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Upko had applied to join PH and its presidential council had agreed to allow the former Barisan Nasional component into its fold.
Meanwhile, Sabah DAP secretary Chan Foong Hin said Upko linking up with PH was “a positive development”, adding that he knew of the party’s intention beforehand.
“I welcome the new member into PH at the state level, too,” he said.
Sabah PH Youth chief Phoong Jin Zhe commended the efforts by Upko in strengthening the opposition camp and standing firm in its struggle for the people.
“Leaders of the opposition should come together, just like (the) ‘Avengers’ … And just like them, we will overcome these dark days when we ourselves are consolidated as one,” he said, referring to the Hollywood superhero movie.
“We need to combine the strengths of all opposition parties to bring a breakthrough for Malaysia. Without sacrifices from everyone, we will not achieve anything.”
Phoong added that PH had shown great unity since 2018 and the opposition should continue to be steadfast in pursuing a democratic, progressive and inclusive governance.
“We must continue to keep our heads up and focus on our struggles for the people. In times when we face a triple crisis of health, economy and politics, we need unity to prevail,” he said.
