Sabah Cm Hints At Early State Polls

(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor has hinted at the possibility of the next state assembly elections being held as early as next year, although the state government still has about two more years left to its term.
“The current state government’s term will end in October 2025, but (the elections) can be brought forward. Therefore, we need to be prepared to face early elections,” he said, according to Harian Metro.
When asked about the likelihood of elections taking place next year, Hajiji did not dismiss the possibility and said it was something that can be “dreamed about”.
Hajiji, who is president of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, was speaking to reporters during the party’s congress in Kota Kinabalu today.
In his speech to party delegates, Hajiji reminded them about the importance of bolstering the machinery of Gagasan Rakyat’s branches and divisions in anticipation of an earlier state general election.
“We need to learn from the dark events that occurred earlier this year,” he said, referring to a failed attempt to remove him as Sabah chief minister in January after Sabah Barisan Nasional, led by Bung Moktar Radin was reported to be in advanced talks with Warisan president Shafie Apdal to unseat Hajiji’s government.
The move failed to materialise after six Sabah Umno assemblymen refused to lend their support. Hajiji then obtained the support of Sabah Pakatan Harapan, enabling the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah coalition to remain in power. - FMT
