Rais To Convince Muhyiddin To Hold Special Parliamentary Sitting Before Aug
Dewan Negara president Rais Yatin will convince Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the leader of the House of Representatives, to hold a special sitting of Parliament before Aug 1.
He said the proposal came after his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah yesterday.
“During the audience, his majesty expressed his wish for a special sitting of Parliament to be held in August,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Online.
The Agong’s wish, he said, will be brought to the leader of the house to fix a date for the special sitting on Covid-19.
“The date of the special parliamentary sitting will be scheduled by the prime minister. Maybe in two days or five days. Then a regular sitting will be held by the end of August,” added Rais.
He said a meeting would be held with the prime minister to set a date for the special sitting, adding that the Agong stressed that it should not be held later than expected.
“The audience was held on the basis of his majesty’s initiative to obtain information and the latest status on Covid-19 in the Malaysian Parliament and the preparation for the upcoming sitting.
“It is possible in August so that the commitment of Parliament is not wasted and the democratic authority is empowered to discuss Covid-19-related issues,” he said yesterday.
Beside Rais, the Agong also summoned Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun, his deputies Azalina Othman Said and Mohd Rashid Hasnon, Dewan Negara deputy president Mohamad Ali Mohamad to Istana Negara yesterday.
The Agong later reiterated that Parliament should be reconvened “as soon as possible”.
In a statement yesterday, Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the Agong wishes to see the emergency proclamation and emergency ordinances debated, in accordance with Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution.
This article stipulated that both the proclamation and ordinances can be revoked if Parliament so chooses.
