MEMBAKUT (Oct 9): Primary school pupils from Beaufort, Membakut and Papar demonstrated their eloquence and social awareness at the inaugural Young Orator Competition organised by the Sabah English Aspiration Society (SEAS) at the English Corner of SK Pengiran Jaya, Pimping, Membakut.
The competition drew enthusiastic participation and featured passionate speeches centred on the unifying theme, “Stop Bullying in All Forms.” The atmosphere was both intense and spirited as participants delivered compelling arguments to raise awareness about bullying among schoolchildren.
The young orators addressed the various forms of bullying, including physical, verbal, social and cyberbullying, while emphasising the growing prevalence of online bullying in the age of social media.
They also highlighted the serious emotional consequences of bullying, such as depression, self-harm, and suicidal tendencies, and called upon students, parents, and educators to collaborate in fostering safer and more compassionate learning environments.
At the conclusion of the competition, Ar Rumaisa Haaniy Kamarul Bahrin, a nine-year-old pupil from SRJKC Khun Ming, Beaufort, emerged as the champion, receiving a certificate and a cash prize of RM350.
Gavin Gan Kui Han of SJKC Kung Ming was the first runner-up while Fadwah Nur Insyirah Mohd Ab Malik from SK Pekan Membakut secured third place. The other finalists were Sanjanaa Kanthan, Keerthila A/P Suthahar and Adenzell Jackie Pudon.
Other participants were from SK Pg Jaya Pimping Membakut, SK Saga Saga Membakut, SK Kayau, SJKC Pei Yin Membakut.
President of SEAS, Dr Zainab Kassim, stated that the competition served a dual purpose to enhance English proficiency, public speaking and communication skills among rural students, while simultaneously promoting moral values and good conduct.
“Through this initiative, SEAS aims to nurture confident, articulate young Malaysians who not only excel in English but also embody respect, empathy and civility,” she said.
She added that SEAS had recently published The SEAS Giant Book of Good Manners, a compilation of artworks by over 100 Sabahan children on the theme of practising good manners in daily life.
Dr Zainab also expressed appreciation to teacher Yantie and the organising team from SEAS and SK Pengiran Jaya for their dedication in ensuring the event’s success.
She extended special thanks to Dr Aliyyah, a paediatrician from USIM, who facilitated a workshop on good manners, as well as to Alan Arthur, Danica Phoebe and their parents for their support.
Alan and Danica are winners of SEAS Presidential Award in 2021 and won tickets for educational trip to United Kingdom in 2022.
Additional gratitude was conveyed to representatives from DBP Sabah, IDS Sabah, and SEDAFIAT for their contributions to the programme.
SEAS Giant Book of Manners is also supported by Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, Sabah Credit Corporation, Sabah Energy Corporation, Maybank Asset Management, Borneo Housing and Sabah State Education Department.
