The new members of the DAP central executive committee who were elected today. Gobind Singh Deo, Chow Kon Yeow and Loke Siew Fook secured the highest votes.SHAH ALAM: High-profile MPs Tony Pua and Ong Kian Ming, who had backed a political cooperation with the Muhyiddin Yassin government last year, failed to defend their seats in the DAP leadership at the party elections today.
Pua, who is DAP national publicity chief, drew 744 votes while Ong, who is the assistant political education director, obtained 535. They trailed far behind Sabah assembly member Jannie Lasimbang who secured a place by placing in 30th position with 877 votes.
The pair had come under heavy criticism last year after suggesting that Pakatan Harapan should look into a proposed framework for bipartisan political cooperation put forward by then Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin just days before he resigned in August.
Two other high-profile members who also failed to make the cut were Bakri MP Yeo Bee Yin and Wanita leader Chong Eng.
Taking a CEC seat for the first time were Pahang assembly member Young Syefura Othman, the only Malay candidate elected to the CEC, and Lim Hui Ying, daughter of DAP mentor Lim Kit Siang and sister of Lim Guan Eng.
Guan Eng, who stepped down as secretary-general, also secured a seat on the CEC and was later elected as party chairman.
A total of 4,149 delegates cast their votes for the 93 candidates vying for the 30 seats in the central executive committee, the party’s highest decision-making body.
Gobind, Chow, Loke top the list
Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo topped the list with 1,782 votes, followed by Penang DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow (1,641) and national organising secretary Loke Siew Fook (1,625).
Loke was later elected by the committee as party secretary-general.
Nine women were also elected to the CEC in line with a constitutional provision to set aside a 30% quota for women in the committee.
They are; Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto, Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi, Lanang MP Alice Lau, Ketari assemblyperson Young Syefura Othman, Kapayan assemblyperson Jannie Lasimbang and Penang DAP secretary Lim Hui Ying.
Kok, Teo and Lasimbang were in the previous central committee, while Yeo and Chong Eng failed to retain their seats. - FMT
