Psm Worried Umno Eyeing Finance Minister Job To Secure Glc Posts
PSM has expressed concern that Umno Youth's lobbying for the finance minister position is intended to secure positions in government-linked companies (GLCs) for the party.
This was after Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki proposed the party's deputy president Mohamad Hasan as the next finance minister.
Mohamad is the state assemblyperson for Rantau in Negeri Sembilan. He will need to be appointed as a senator in order to take up the position of a federal minister.
PSM central committee member Sharan Raj noted that the finance minister is responsible for key appointments to important government-linked entities such as the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Khazanah Nasional Bhd, and Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB).
"If Umno truly does not care about positions, can all Umno Youth MPs vow that they will not accept any positions in GLCs?" he said.
"Political appointments had caused many GLCs requiring bailout with public funds and led to a loss of jobs like Malaysia Airlines (MAS)," he added.
Sharan suggested that the appointment should be left to their respective unions to curb cronyism, nepotism, and patronage among politicians.

Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who was sworn in as the ninth prime minister last Saturday, is forming his new cabinet.
He promised to have his line-up of ministers ready this week.
Ahead of his decision, there has been intense lobbying from various parties within his ruling coalition.
The finance minister post was previously occupied by Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, a corporate leader with close ties to then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin who is the Bersatu president.
Muhyiddin was forced to resign after 15 out of 38 Umno MPs withdrew their support for Muhyiddin's coalition government which comprised Perikatan Nasional, BN, PAS, GPS, PBS, and independent MPs.
However, 14 out of the 15 Umno MPs returned to the coalition's fold after it was agreed that Ismail Sabri will take over as the prime minister. - Mkini
