Prosecutors Appeal Against Rosmah S Acquittal In Money Laundering Case
Prosecutors have filed an appeal against the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision to acquit Rosmah Mansor’s money laundering charges.
“The notice of appeal has been filed by the prosecutors today against the entirety of the high court decision,” said Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar in a statement.
Rosmah, the wife of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, was facing 12 money laundering charges involving RM7 million and five charges of failing to declare her income to the Inland Revenue Board.
She was accused of committing the offences between Dec 4, 2013, and June 8, 2017.
Judge K Muniandy granted an order of acquittal yesterday after allowing Rosmah's application to have all charges against her quashed.
The application was based on the grounds that the charges were defective and failed to disclose the essential elements of the alleged offences.
Apart from the money laundering charges, Rosmah is also facing corruption charges linked to the solar hybrid energy project for 369 rural schools in Sarawak, as well as a civil suit from 1MDB seeking to reclaim money and luxury goods allegedly bought with misappropriated funds.
In the RM1.25 billion corruption case, the Kuala Lumpur High Court found Rosmah guilty and sentenced her to 10 years imprisonment for each of three charges, which will run concurrently, and an RM970 million fine.
Rosmah has appealed against the decision and is seeking to recuse trial judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan. Both are slated to be heard at the Court of Appeal in March next year.
The US$346 million lawsuit by 1MDB and 10 other companies is still pending at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, with a mention scheduled on Feb 7 next year. - Mkini
