Prosecution To Call Up To 25 Witnesses In Src Rm27m Money Laundering Trial
Prosecutors would be calling between 20 and 25 witnesses to testify against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak in the RM27 million SRC International corruption case.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul said this to the Kuala Lumpur High Court during the mention of the case against former finance minister Najib.
“In total, it is 20 to 25 witnesses,” the prosecutor told trial judge K Muniandy.
Ashrof added that the prosecution needed more time to prepare the witness statements, as they can only prepare one witness statement so far.
Muniandy then set May 27 for mention of the case, which is set for full trial for five days in September.
The accused was represented by lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.
‘Not guilty’
Previously, the criminal court said Najib could apply for a full acquittal or discharge not amounting to an acquittal if the attorney-general has not decided by September whether to allow the accused’s letter of representation for the dropping of the case.
On Feb 3, 2019, before the criminal court, Najib pleaded not guilty to three laundering money charges that involved the alleged accepting of proceeds from illegal activities amounting to RM27 million, via his three bank accounts.
He was accused of committing the offence at AmIslamic Bank, Ambank Group Building, No 55, Jalan Raja Chulan on July 8, 2014.
The charge was framed under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
He faces a maximum fine of RM5 million, imprisonment of up to five years, or both if convicted.
The RM27 million SRC International money laundering case against Najib has been postponed several times since 2019 due to the accused’s other criminal cases.
This criminal case is different from the RM42 million SRC corruption case against Najib, for which he has been convicted and is serving a six-year jail sentence and fined RM50 million. - Mkini
