Pre Deepavali Traffic At A Crawl On Major Highways

Last week, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced a 50% discount for two days on major highways in conjunction with the Deepavali celebrations.

A spokesman for the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said traffic on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) northbound, was slow from Sungai Buloh to Rawang and Bandar Cassia to Bukit Tambun, Bernama reported.
“For the northbound route, traffic flow was slow from Senai to Kulai while the southbound was slow from Kajang to Bangi, Putra Mahkota to Nilai, Ayer Hitam to Machap and Sedenak to Kulai,” he was quoted as saying.
He added that traffic flow on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) eastbound was also slow from the KL Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) to the Gombak Toll Plaza and the road transport department (JPJ) enforcement station to Genting Sempah.
Meanwhile, on the North-South Expressway Central Link (Elite) southbound, traffic was also slow from KLIA to the Nilai Interchange.
The spokesman said the weather was reported to be fair in most areas as of this morning.
“LLM advises highway users to drive carefully, obey the authorities’ instructions and plan their journeys in advance to avoid severe congestion,” he said, according to Bernama.
The heavy traffic is expected to continue tomorrow due to the 50% discount for tolls on major highways, as announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim when tabling the 2026 budget on Oct 10. He said the toll discount, in conjunction with Deepavali, will be in effect on Oct 18 and Oct 19 (today and tomorrow).
