Police Will Probe Report Against Ex Ag Says Igp
Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador has confirmed that a police report lodged against former attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali will be investigated
“All police reports lodged will be investigated,” he told Malaysiakini this evening when quizzed on the matter
However, he did not disclose under what section investigations would be carried out
Hamid was asked to respond to a report lodged by DAP lawmaker Lim Lip Eng with the Dang Wangi district police headquarters yesterday
In his report, the Kepong MP said Apandi should be investigated for his alleged role in covering up the 1MDB scandal during the time of former premier Najib Abdul Razak
Lip Eng also wanted the former MACC and police chiefs to be investigated as well
Last week, Malaysiakini reported that MACC is not investigating Apandi, following DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang's call for the former AG to be probed
He also urged police to investigate the alleged cover-up which included Apandi's attempts to block co-operation with investigating authorities from over 10 countries in relation to the 1MDB scandal.
Kit Siang had made the call after it was reported that the Home Ministry rescinded the travel ban imposed on Apandi (above)
In July 2015, Najib appointed Apandi as the attorney-general to replace Abdul Gani Patail, who was then heading a special task force to investigate the billions in the former premier's bank accounts
Najib was being investigated for receiving RM2.6 billion (US$681 million), purportedly a political donation from the Saudi royal family, as well as RM42 million originating from SRC International
Although Gani was said to have been replaced on health grounds, speculation was rife that he was on the verge of charging Najib for corruption
Last year, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had claimed that Gani told him this during a meeting in Putrajaya
In January 2016, Apandi cleared Najib of any wrongdoing. He vacated his position after Pakatan Harapan came to power last year
Soon after the election, Mahathir said the government is considering investigating the former AG as well. - Mkini
