PETALING JAYA: Mohd Shukri Abdull, who on Saturday stepped down as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief despite being on contract until next year, said he was merely keeping a promise
Speaking to FMT, Shukri revealed he had promised Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad that he would call it a day a year after he was installed as the MACC chief last year
“I am upholding my promise to the prime minister. That is my principle,” he said
Asked to comment on his tenure, Shukri said that when he returned to MACC, he had a mission to accomplish, namely complete his probe into the scandal-plagued 1MDB and its former subsidiary SRC International
He said the matter had since been brought to court and the suspects involved charged
“I have done my part. I have completed my mission,” he said
Moving on, Shukri hopes his successor, Latheefa Koya, will follow through on what he has “put in place”
Shukri joined the then Anti-Corruption Agency in 1984 as an investigating officer after graduating from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
He was appointed chief commissioner last May, and broke down when he recounted to the media his time “running away” from Malaysian authorities to the United States
This was after his ex-boss, Abu Kassim Mohamed, had decided to indict former prime minister Najib Razak over the RM2.6 billion allegedly found in the latter’s bank accounts
However, Shukri claimed that on the day Najib was to be charged, then attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail was removed from his position, and a Cabinet reshuffle followed. - FMT
