Police Warn Of Scam Using Fake Sms From Local Bank
A woman in Petaling Jaya has reported that her account was cleared out after she followed instructions on a fake SMS message.PETALING JAYA: Police are warning of a fraud scheme involving a fake SMS purportedly from Public Bank that contains a link to a website which appears to be that of the bank.
A report was lodged with Petaling Jaya police on Wednesday by a 51-year-old woman who said her account had been cleared out after she visited the site and followed the instructions to enter her banking information and password.
The message had stated that her account was at high risk of being exposed to third parties, said Selangor commercial crime squad chief Muhammad Yazid Muhammad Yew.
He said the link in the text message was to pbebankonline.com, and he advised the public not to click on the link as it is believed to be a new tactic used by scammers to deceive victims.
The warning about the fake site (left) and the genuine Public Bank login page.“So far, two similar cases have been reported in Selangor involving total losses of RM33,500,” he said.
The fake link in the SMS is similar to the genuine Public Bank website at “https://www.pbebank.com“. However, the login page for Public Bank online uses “www2.pbebank.com“.
An FMT check on “pbebankonline.com” this evening brought up only an error message that the site is not reachable.
The existence of the fake site was highlighted yesterday by an anti-scammer group on Facebook which warned that “pbebankonline.com” was a phishing site used to entice bank customers into revealing their online account information and password. - FMT
