Bukit Aman’s traffic enforcement and investigation department director Azman Ahmad Sapri said in a statement that a thorough investigation would be conducted. “We will not tolerate any wrongdoing by the personnel involved,” he said.
The 51-second video clip is an excerpt from a 30-minute YouTube video posted by the British couple, who are travelling around the world in a campervan. The video clip on X (formerly Twitter) has had 1.1 million views.
Social media users called on the authorities to investigate the incident.
The video shows a policeman (with his face blurred) purportedly telling the couple that he was going to issue a summons for speeding which they had to settle at a police station.
He said it would cost them RM300 if they chose to pay at the station or if they decided to “pay here” it would cost them RM100. The couple agreed and paid the man RM100.
The couple said they were initially told that they exceeded the 60km/h speed limit while on their way to Ipoh. “I guess that we were (speeding) and having the opportunity to pay a lower cash rate and not drive to the police station and get points was a great option.”
One social media user identified as Farahin wrote that the whole world now knows Malaysia is a corrupted country. “Even with foreigners you have no qualms,” she wrote on X.
Others called for action by the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Bukit Aman advised the public against speculating about the matter and urged those with information on the incident to come forward. - FMT
