Police Investigate Ginie Lim For Violating State Election Sops

Police have summoned former PKR Machap Jaya assemblyperson Ginie Lim for distributing face masks last month during the campaigning period for the Malacca election.
When contacted, Alor Gajah OCPD Arshad Abu confirmed with Malaysiakini that the police are investigating Lim under the Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Act 1988 (Act 342).
"She is being investigated under Act 342 for violating the (Malacca election) campaign standard operating procedures (SOP)," he said.
Taking to Facebook this afternoon, Lim said she went to the Alor Gajah district police headquarters to record her statement for an event that happened on Oct 29 at a night market in Taman Melaka Perdana.
Lim was the area's incumbent assemblyperson before the state polls.
"Distributing masks to the people and supporting the businesses there are the responsibility of the incumbent assemblyperson.
"Handing out masks to businesses and the people has become a regular activity of (my) service centre since the (Covid-19) pandemic's outbreak.
"Why did the authorities only call me for my statement after the state election? Is this an act of revenge by the new government?" she asked.

Lim also thanked her supporters and comrades in Pakatan Harapan for their show of solidarity.
According to the photos on her post, Harapan leaders who accompanied her this afternoon to the police station were from DAP, including former Malacca DAP chief Tey Kok Kiew, Kota Laksamana assemblyperson Low Chee Leong and Bandar Hilir assemblyperson Leng Chau Yen.
Lim was dropped by PKR in the Malacca polls. The party appointed a newcomer, Law Bing Haw, to contest the seat but MCA's Ngwe Hee Sem defeated him with 938 votes.
Before the state election, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Covid-19 protocols were amended to ban all physical gatherings and social events related to the Malacca polls from Oct 25 to Nov 27.
The Health Ministry had warned that "disguised" campaigning can still be punishable under the ban.
After that, the Election Commission also banned all physical campaigns, ceramah, house visits and walkabouts throughout the campaign period. - Mkini
