STATE POLLS | Perikatan Nasional is still not divulging who will helm Selangor if the coalition wins the state despite having a former menteri besar, Azmin Ali, leading the charge.
According to PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, several names have been shortlisted for the post.
“It is still under discussion and we will make an announcement soon. Several names have been shortlisted. All of them are qualified (to be the menteri besar).
“What is important is that the candidates must win.
“We don’t want to announce first and then the person loses (in the election). Because of this, we will have to wait and see,” Hamzah (above) told reporters on the sidelines of a ceramah in Selangor last night.
Hamzah was responding to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim who dared his opponents to name their choice for the menteri besar post since Pakatan Harapan has earmarked incumbent Amirudin Shari for a second term if the coalition retained the state.
Azmin, who is Selangor PN chief, would be contesting in the Hulu Kelang seat, which he first won in the 1999 general election at the height of the Reformasi movement.
The Bersatu supreme council member, who opted not to defend his Bukit Antarabangsa seat, is facing PKR Wanita deputy chairperson Juwairiyah Zulkifli.

In last November’s general election, the first since his defection from PKR which contributed to the collapse of the Harapan federal government in 2020, Azmin failed to defend his Gombak federal seat in Selangor against Amirudin.
Previously, PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin said Azmin, who was menteri besar from September 2014 to June 2018, has a “duty” to deliver the state.
Azmin has also evaded answering questions on whether he is the menteri besar candidate.
On Aug 3, the Bersatu leader said the decision would be left to the wisdom of Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafudin Idris Shah if PN wins the state on Aug 12.
"It is up to the palace, as the power to appoint the menteri besar lies solely with the sultan.
"I am confident that His Highness will act in accordance with the constitution and the laws governing the state government," he added. - Mkini
