Pn Must Prove It Cares For All Malaysians Says Gerakan Leader
Gerakan deputy chief Oh Tong Keong says the coalition can do this by implementing policies friendly to non-Malays in the states that it leads.
Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong said PN’s policies must demonstrate inclusivity, especially through a state governance style that is fair and equitable to non-Malays.PETALING JAYA: States led by Perikatan Nasional (PN) must implement policies that are friendly to non-Malays to support its chairman Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement that he is “a Malay who cares for all Malaysians”, a Gerakan leader says
Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong welcomed Muhyiddin’s remark, which he said reflected the coalition’s concern and commitment to safeguarding the interests of all communities.
However, he warned that Muhyiddin’s assurance might fall flat without concrete follow-through, and fail to convince non-Malays that PN genuinely championed the rights of all ethnic groups.
“What matters the most is follow-up action, and PN’s policies must clearly demonstrate (inclusivity), especially through a state governance style that is fair and equitable to non-Malays.
“In particular, the existing way of life for non-Malays should not be disrupted or restricted,” he told FMT.
Muhyiddin, a former prime minister, recently sought to play down a declaration he had made in 2010 about being a “Malay first”, saying it was no longer important.
Speaking on May 4, he said while he considered himself a Malay Malaysian, he had never seen himself “as only Malay”.
PN currently governs the states of Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perlis, which are all led by menteris besar from PAS.
Oh also claimed that negative perceptions of PN among non-Malays stemmed from propaganda and narratives played up by rival parties.
“Our rivals have long sown fear among non-Malays, spreading the narrative that their way of life would be under threat if they supported PN.
“Therefore, PN must back its assurances with real action and policies, especially in PN-led states, to prove its sincerity to non-Malays,” he said.
Malaysian Indian People’s Party president P Punithan also said that Muhyiddin’s stance showed that PN was not a racist coalition, despite what critics might claim.
“Today, this is evident. PN leaders want to prioritise national unity so that the country’s progress and economic benefits can be shared by all communities, without anyone feeling left out,” he said. - FMT
