PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has proposed that all Cabinet ministers who are Universiti Malaya (UM) alumni contribute RM10,000 each to the UM Endowment Fund.
He also proposed that UM graduates earning RM10,000 or more per month donate at least RM1,000 to the fund.
“If we pool these contributions, I am confident we can raise over half a billion ringgit and build a larger fund,” he said at the UM alumni dinner tonight.
UM alumni currently holding ministerial positions in the unity government include transport minister Loke Siew Fook; law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said; housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming; foreign minister Mohamad Hasan; defence minister Khaled Nordin; and human resources minister Steven Sim.
However, Anwar said the proposals did not absolve the government of its responsibility to provide funding for the university’s development.
Instead, he described it as a means to ease the government’s financial burden that was inherited from previous administrations.
“The country has become infamous for weak governance, with the national debt reaching RM1.5 trillion at one point,” he said.
“Financial management must be more efficient and many of those who are involved in economic planning and management are UM alumni.”
Anwar expressed hope that once the economy improves, more government funds could be allocated to the university. - FMT
