"Our country right now is trying to embrace change. However, whatever we do will have no effect if we have no sincerity and determination to change for the better.
"We no longer want Malaysia to be known as a country that is full of racial enmity and corruption scandals," he said in his speech at a breaking-the-fast event with tahfiz students and the orphans at Masjid Ahmadi, Kampung Rantau Panjang today.
As such, the premier said he hoped that the people would pray for him so that he can be in the position (as the prime minister) longer, to materialise his efforts in bringing change to the country, especially in the aspect of eliminating corruption.
Anwar said his approach to combating corruption started from the top level.
"The damage to the country's leadership system begins from top leadership.
"Whoever becomes the prime minister, Finance minister or state leadership, if they only seek to build wealth for themselves, their families, their children, and their wives, it will ruin the country.
"As such, I will not tolerate that aspect (corrupt practices)," he said.
Previously, the Tambun member of parliament had repeatedly stressed that strict action must be taken against those who abuse their power and were corrupt.
This, he said, since corruption had become systemic, there must be no compromise when dealing with it.
He said despite being viewed with cynicism, the unity government remained firm in its stance against abuse of power and corrupt practices. - NST
