Pkr S Iswardy Morni Resigns From Party Positions After Sedition Conviction
Petra Jaya division chief and PKR information coordinating secretary Iswardy Morni said he will officially step down from his leadership roles in PKR tomorrow.
PETALING JAYA: PKR leader Iswardy Morni has relinquished all his party positions after being fined RM5,000 last month for insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong four years ago.
In a video posted on TikTok, the Petra Jaya division chief and PKR information coordinating secretary said he will officially step down from his leadership roles in PKR tomorrow.
“The court case has ended and I have been fined. I didn’t appeal, so I can’t contest in the next general election. The earliest I can run for elections is 2032,” he said.
“For party elections, it’s up to the party, but I don’t think they will allow me (to contest any posts).”
Iswardy was charged on June 1, 2021 under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act 1948 for statements made on Facebook deemed to be seditious and insulting towards former king Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.
On Jan 23, the Kuala Lumpur sessions court found Iswardy guilty and slapped him with a RM5,000 fine. Iswardy had until Feb 6 to file a notice of appeal against his conviction and sentence.
A major factor that Iswardy had to consider was that he would be barred from contesting parliamentary or state elections for a period of five years unless he obtained a pardon from the king.
The Federal Constitution disqualifies anyone from standing as an election candidate for five years after being sentenced to at least one year in jail or fined a minimum of RM2,000.
While Iswardy acknowledged that his political future within PKR remained uncertain, he insisted he would remain involved in politics.
“I’ve never had any ambitions to be an elected representative or a minister,” he said.
“I joined politics because I believe the people must have a voice.” - FMT
