Incumbent PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli claimed that the contest for the number two post between him and Nurul Izzah Anwar is taking place on an uneven playing field.
He said it is being orchestrated in favour of the prime minister’s daughter as the PKR machinery has been mobilised to support her.
"The signal is clear, the entire party machinery has been mobilised to ensure I lose to Nurul Izzah. It’s obvious, and I have no issue with that.
"I'm here (in Sarawak) not to beg for votes; that’s everyone’s right. I’m contesting with the awareness that if I win, it will be the end of the world.
"Are you mad to think I could win… when everything has already been arranged? This is truly a contest on an uneven playing field," he said during his “Hiruk” campaign tour in Sarawak last night.
Previously, Rafizi expressed his willingness to resign as the economy minister if he failed to defend his post in the PKR election.
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah AnwarAdmitting he would feel somewhat relieved, Rafizi said losing would allow him more time and freedom to speak out on various issues.
Do-or-die move
He also said yesterday that his decision to contest this time around is a “do-or-die” move, fully aware he is likely to lose.
He added that PKR leaders’ previous open endorsements of Nurul Izzah, who is the party’s vice-president, were intended to weaken his position and pressure him into withdrawing from the race.
However, Rafizi stressed that he will not hand his opponent an uncontested victory.
"I sensed from the beginning that the signals being sent were designed to break my spirit so I wouldn’t run, allowing (Nurul Izzah) to win unopposed. But the problem is, I’m hard-headed.
"I knew from the start that this was a do-or-die contest, just like our (PKR) friends here in Sarawak. You enter the race, not sure if you’ll win, but you’ll definitely lose," he added. - Mkini
