Pkr Man Sees Extreme Danger In Pn Leaders Running Country
Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim of PKR says his views could change if there is a new generation of leaders ‘who are more rational, trustworthy, and responsible’.
PETALING JAYA: An outspoken MP from PKR has warned of the “extreme danger” in allowing current leaders of Perikatan Nasional to run the country again, after their undemocratic actions during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim described their actions, declaring a national state of emergency and suspending Parliament, as “a betrayal of the people” that was difficult to forgive.
He said none of the current leaders of Bersatu and PAS were qualified to lead the country, following recent statements promoting leaders of the two parties as potential candidates to be prime minister.
“My view on the capability of Bersatu and PAS leaders in managing the country could change if they were able to present a new generation of leaders who are more rational, trustworthy, and responsible,” he said.
Of the current leaders, he said in a social media post: “The mistake they made, which I find difficult to forgive even until today, is that Perikatan Nasional declared a state of emergency across the country and suspended Parliament for six months (during the pandemic).
“As long as Bersatu and PAS are led by the old generation who are responsible for suspending Parliament, blocking access to it, and declaring an emergency across the country, it remains extremely dangerous to entrust power to those who have a record of destroying democracy in Malaysia.”
Earlier this week, four PN leaders were highlighted as potential candidates to be prime minister.
Bersatu MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal named them as PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin, PAS vice president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
Later, PAS cleric Mokhtar Senik suggested party president Abdul Hadi Awang as a potential prime ministerial candidate as well.
Muhyiddin was prime minister of a PN-led government that called for a state of emergency from January to August 2021. The state of emergency provided the government with broad powers to enact laws and policies without parliamentary approval.
The Muhyiddin government, and the subsequent government of Ismail Sabri Yakub declared national lockdowns restricting the movement of people in order to curb the spread of Covid-19. - FMT
