PETALING JAYA: A Sabah Umno leader has urged Pakatan Harapan (PH) to clarify its position on working with Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN), ahead of the state elections that must be held this year.
Sabah Umno elections director Jeffery Nor Mohamed said PH needed to clarify the matter after several Sabah PKR leaders made remarks he deemed disrespectful to the relationship between the two coalitions, The Borneo Post reported.
“If Sabah PH believes there is no need to consult with BN regarding contested seats, then they should clearly state their intended relationship with Sabah BN,” he was quoted as saying.
He was reportedly responding to Sabah PKR information chief Razeef Rakimin warning other parties against riding on his party’s hard work in Tanjung Aru by contesting the seat being eyed by PKR.
Jeffery said Malaysia was a democracy that allowed anyone to run for election but maintained that Sabah Umno’s focus was on the people’s welfare, not contesting for seats.
BN and the ruling state coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) are both courting PH for an alliance in the state election this year.
In November, Sabah BN and PH leaders held an informal meeting in Kota Kinabalu, where they agreed to set up open communication channels to improve their partnership.
The leaders of both coalitions also said they were open to forming ties with other parties in preparation for the state polls.
However, Sabah Umno has been urging GRS chairman Hajiji Noor to step down as chief minister over the alleged mining scandal involving several assemblymen from the ruling coalition.
Yesterday, Sabah PKR secretary Sazalye Donol Abdullah said the party fully backed and trusted Hajiji to continue leading the state government, citing Sabah’s political stability and economic growth. - FMT
