(Bernama pic)SEPANG: Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin says the rejection of a motion over a key provision under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) did not contravene the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Pakatan Harapan and Putrajaya.
He said this was decided by the Cabinet at its meeting yesterday.
“The Cabinet discussed the matter and we decided that what happened in the Dewan Rakyat over the Sosma motion did not violate the MoU.
“The MoU only applies to bills that involve a loss of confidence in the government and those involving budgets.

Ads by Kiosked“The decision to reject the motion does not mean PH does not support the government.
“They just did not agree with Sosma’s provisions,” he said at a press conference after launching MyChampion, a community health initiative this afternoon.
On Wednesday, home minister Hamzah Zainudin had tabled a motion in the Dewan Rakyat to extend the enforcement of sub-section 4(5) under Sosma, which allows a maximum 28-day detention without trial, for another five years beginning from July 31.
A total of 86 MPs voted against the motion while 85 were for it. The remaining 49 lawmakers were absent due to various reasons.
The provision enables police to detain a person suspected of being involved in terrorist activities for a period not exceeding 28 days for investigations.
The provision has to be reviewed every five years or it will cease to have an effect when both the Dewan Rakyat and the Dewan Negara vote against extending it.
Ads by KioskedPreviously, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook had sought to give an assurance that the decision by PH MPs to vote against the motion did not threaten the MoU.
Loke also said there had been no discussion with the opposition on the extension of this provision prior to tabling the motion. - FMT
